27. The truth about comprehension deficits

As a reading specialist, I was often sought out by other teachers to help figure out, or dare I say “fix”, academic issues they would find in their students.  One of the most common conversations went something like this, “Hey Emily, I’ve got this kid and he can’t comprehend.  What should I do?”

My first response was always, “Why?”  You see there are so many reasons why a student may struggle with comprehension at all grades.  Poor comprehension may be an underlying symptom of  a deeper deficit, and that deficit, not the comprehension issue, determines the course of intervention that the student requires.

In today’s episode we will explore some of the potential skill deficits in students that cause comprehension delays and what you can do about them.
